Giant sand castle of suck

So I just opened up Parallels to test a website on IE6, and was annoyed by the stupid little task-bar icon bubbles that pop up every time I login to Windows. You know, one's like "Your computer might be at risk," and "Your computer is out of date. Check for updates." I should probably do what they are asking me to do, but that's beside the point. Upon seeing their arrival for like the 50th time, this is what came out of my mouth,

"That's just one of the many grains of sand that make Windows a giant sand castle of suck."

I know it's bad form to laugh at your own joke, and it's even worse to then blog about said joke, but I thought it was pretty funny. But then of course, maybe you had to be there.

I have to admit, it's quite clever. :)

Sometimes you just have one of those moments of clarity... I'm going to have to borrow that description!

Nah - if you can't laugh at your own jokes, then what's the point of having a sense of humor? Who cares if no one else gets it. As long as you're amused and happy for the moment :)

Or maybe it was just that funny :)

Hey Nate,

You just need to do it. It's really not that hard, although the OSX is a paradigm shift and you will feel like a fish out of water at first. Just be sure to have a Mac savvy friend handy when you switch.

It's been my experience that Windows users think about windows as either fully expanded mode or fully minimized. Apple users tend to think about floating windows and can often see more than one at once. In other words, get used to having more floating windows, there's no such thing as fully expanded.

I don't use Microsoft office at all and when I do need document/spreadsheet tool I use Google Docs or Neo Office, both of which are average but free. However, if you need MS Office, you'll need to buy the Mac version which may be a $200 or something.

In a lot of ways, the Apple OS will seem clunkier at first, but the keyboard shortcuts will make things seem a lot faster. I used the home and end keys a ton to move to the end of the line. It took me a while to learn that Apple-Arrow-right and Apple-Arrow-left are the equivalent. Anyway, the trick is to just switch.

Just do it man!
