I read banned books

Andy pointed out that the American Library Association, among others, is helping to promote Banned Book Week. Basically, there are a bunch of really good books that have been contested over the years. Here's a list of the top 100 contested books in the nineties. Some of these books are probably good to skip, or at the very least consumed by a mature and discerning reader: Sex by Madonna, The New Joy of Gay Sex, Daddy's Roommate, Heather Has Two Mommies, etc. However, there are a ton of books that I've read that were great: Catcher in the Rye, Bridge To Terebithia, Harry Potter Series, Of Mice and Men, A Wrinkle In Time, To Kill A Mockingbird, etc. I'll let you know what I think.
I just ordered these books from Amazon Marketplace (ie. used):

Right on, Mark!! I think most people can decide for themselves (and their kids) what is and isn't worthwhile literature. I hate the thought of book burning and book banning.

I've read several of the books on the banned book list, including most of the ones you mentioned (the *second* set, not the first set LOL), and intend to read more.

(ok, I thought I had posted, but maybe not...)

I say, "Right On" Mark!!

Of course there are going to be books that aren't worth the paper they're printed on, but that really should be for the individual, or in some cases, parents, to decide - not a government or institution (school/church/orgnanization) for everyone else.

I have always, and hopefully will alway, support the free exchange of ideas - even ideas I disagree with for spiritual, moral or political reasons. I can even see the merit in reading books containing ideas I might disagree with - even if just to be able to enter into an intelligent discussion on why I disagree with the ideas in the book.

I've read a good many books on the "banned book" list and hope to read many more "banned" books in the future.
